Roman Wall Trip

The children enjoyed a trip to the Roman Wall. Year 2 and 3 visited the Roman Fort and Vindolanda and Year 4 / 5 and 6 visited Birdoswald and took part in a Roman jewellery workshop.

On Tuesday 6th March Year 4 / 5 / 6 pupils went on a trip to the Roman Fort of Birdoswald. They set off at about 9.45 am and arrived at about 10.15 am. The bus journey was very long and quite boring but they arrived at Birdoswald to meet a warm sunshine and a blustery wind. They met a lady who showed them around to look at some Roman artefacts. There was a miniature model of the fort, properly built. It was very interesting. At about 11.00 am they went outside to look at the fort, it was very peculiar! Firstly they looked at the west gateway, then the granaries and also the east gateway. Then finally after a short walk to a cliff faced hill they peered over and a spectacular view met their eyes. There were trees on the banks of the river and the sound was nice, it was beautiful. Then they went to the classroom and made a gold crown headdress and some bead necklaces. Then they all sat down to enjoy lunch. After lunch Jefficus the soldier came and told the children about the Roman Army. Some facts were interesting while others were gruesome. After they all went back on the bus everyone said that they had really enjoyed the trip and thank you to the teachers.

History Themed Week

Threlkeld School enjoyed a history week. The younger children looked at historical clothing and also compared washing clothes in Victorian times with modern day. They used a dolly tub and mangle to wash their clothes. They also had a visit from Florence Nightingale allowing them to ask questions about her life as a nurse. The older children experienced a Roman week following a visit to the Roman Wall. They studied various aspects of Roman life including making clay lamps, mosaics and educational posters. On Friday parents were invited to join in the fun as children and staff dressed up in tunics and togas for a Roman feast.

Choir at Distington

Threlkeld School Choir along with five other Cumbrian schools took part in a concert organised by Mr Strachan who is the music teacher for all six schools. The concert was held at Distington Community School and parents were invited to attend. The children performed songs and played musical instruments and the evening was a great success.

Easter Service

The Easter service took place in St Mary’s on the last day of term. The children sang songs, read poems and told us the Easter story.

Sports Events

The children have enjoyed taking part in a number of sporting events this term against other local Primary Schools. These have included Tag Rugby, Football and Orienteering.
