Computer access for everyone
Whether you are an experienced computer user or a complete novice, whether you love them or hate them, you can’t deny the importance of computers. In our modern world, computers can provide access to communication, education, shopping and almost limitless information. But access to computers can be blocked if the user is unable to see the screen or operate mouse and keyboard. There is a multitude of adaptations that can make computers accessible: - magnified computers for partially sighted people - talking computers for blind people - computers that listen to your commands for people unable to use the mouse or keyboard - and much more. A free service is now available throughout Eden to advise you on what is available to make your computer accessible. SCATS (South Cumbria Assisted Technology Service) has been operating for more than two years in South Lakes and Furness, and well over 100 people have been helped. We offer free advice on what special equipment or adjustments are available to suit your needs, and we can give ongoing support and training. The service is funded by the LSC (Learning and Skills Council), and so is completely free to users. We will visit you in your own home, at work or at college. Although some of the solutions can be quite expensive, many are relatively cheap or even free. Sometimes, simply learning a different way of doing something on the computer can be enough to make it accessible. If you are interested please contact Charles Ely (contact details below). Even if you have never touched a computer, but would like to know how one could be made accessible for you, just in case you decide to get one in the future, we will be happy to visit you.
