Cumbria in Bloom: Judges Comments - November 2011
Judges Alan Heath and Florence Gowling visited Threlkeld on 12th July 2011. Some of their comments are noted below:
Section A: Overall Appearance
“Two inviting entrances from the A66, cleared from rough growth and set out with seats that are used and all maintained to a high standard. Flowering containers of lily, perennials and annuals were in prominent positions throughout the village. The whole village was clean and tidy. Congratulations to Threlkeld Village Hall Trust, Blencathra Centre, St. Mary’s Church, Threlkeld School, the Village Newsletter and Residents for their excellent work together.”
Section B: Gardening (Horticultural Activity)
“Special mention to the entry displays, the Hollies, No 1 & 3 Ghyll Bank, Bus Shelter Display and the Town Cross flowerbed. The churchyard looks smart and the War Memorial bedecked with sustainable plants. There is a fine floral display at the Horse and Farrier.”
Section C: Consideration of the Environment
“Work with the school keeps the village free of litter and encourages recycling and composting on a well maintained site. The open classroom at Kiln Howe set in a willow surround is impressive.”
Section D: Community Participation
“The Cumbria in Bloom group is excellent, giving direct action for village projects. There is evidence of whole year round care with autumn and spring displays in evidence.”
